Huzzah! A Portrait of Renaissance Festival Culture

Hate City Productions is pleased to announce its newest project, a documentary that will explore the lives of renaissance festival participants, performers, vendors, patrons, and organizers across the United States to examine how the synthesis of anachronism and popular entertainment is evolving from a pastime into a thriving and sustainable folk culture.

We intend to look at the renaissance festival phenomenon in a very broad manner; but with a focus primarily on the culture of the 'rennie' scene; approaching the topic from many angles. This is not exactly a journalistic project, we are rennies ourselves and feel that renfest culture is a good thing and deserves a deep exploration. We want the perspectives of performers and how they live their lives, the merchants and how they ply their trade, and the patrons that keep the phenomenon growing. We are interested as well in the fashion and art, and how these have changed over the years as the influence of pop culture has made its way into the festival scene.

Production will last from November 2006 until the end of 2007 and cover 12-15 festivals around the country.

I think that is an awesome idea. This will be my 24th year of doing Renn Faires, either as patron or vendor at NYRF ... (though my vendor days are now gone that I do Pennsic every year and miss the 1st two weekends of NYRF).

From King Richards in Mass to Md Faire, from PARF & NJ to Tenn and North Cal ... it is one fantastic ride, and would love to see a documentary on this.

    Good Luck
